Youngstown, OH – Youngstown Police said a couple had to be carried from their Pine Hollow Drive home after dangerous levels of carbon monoxide were found.
Responding to a 911 call, police arrived and heard screaming from inside. They then broke down the door and helped get Abdul Alnizami, Heather McKenzie and their cat safely out of the house.
Alnizami and McKenzie were sweating profusely and barely coherent, according to a police report.
The Youngstown Fire Chief says a generator was running in the basement and filled the house with carbon monoxide. There was no electricity in the home.
Youngstown firefighters found deadly carbon monoxide levels at 467 parts per million.
Alnizami and McKenzie were taken to St. Elizabeth’s Health Center. Police said their carbon monoxide exposure levels were so high, they were both put into hyperbaric chambers for treatment. They were in stable condition Wednesday morning.
Four police officers also went to the hospital to get checked out for breathing in the fumes. They are all healthy and two will return to duty Wednesday night.
Youngstown Police Chief Robin Lees credited the quick action of police officers with saving the family.
In this case, time really mattered and the officers seized that opportunity, he said.
