Madison, WI – A West Side resident escaped harm early Tuesday morning after being awakened by a carbon monoxide alarm, due to her car running in the closed garage of the home.

The incident happened at about 2:45 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Whitney Way, the Madison Fire Department said.

The carbon monoxide detector went off in the second floor bathroom of the home, prompting the woman to call 911 and to get out of the house.

“She waited outside with her dogs,” said department spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster. “The alarm was no longer sounding when firefighters arrived, but their air monitor picked up carbon monoxide levels at around 60 parts per million.”

CO levels are normally less than three ppm.

Firefighters looked for the source, and when the garage door was opened, found it was coming from the resident’s car, still running.
