Dayton, OH – Two students at Franklin Monroe School were hospitalized after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning while sitting in a parked car.
Faulty exhaust on the vehicle is being blamed for the incident. Both students were found unconscious in the car around 7:30 a.m. today at 8639 Oakes Road.
The male student was taken to Wayne Health Care, and his condition is not yet known, according to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
The female student was treated at the scene and released to her parents for them to take her to a Dayton hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
School staff called 911 after finding the students unresponsive in the car. They were notified by the girl’s mother.
The girl had called her mother from the car after the boy passed out, according to the sheriff’s office. She also became unconscious before school staff found them.
The Pitsburg Fire Department used a gas detector to confirm a significant amount of carbon monoxide in the car. According to the sheriff’s office, the car was not running when school officials found it, but they believe it was running at some point while the students were sitting in it.
Franklin Monroe Schools notified parents of the incident.
