Two men die in car trailer

Allen, NY – A father and son were found dead in a car trailer Wednesday after they were reportedly overcome by carbon monoxide, a New York State Police investigator said. Amity-based state police Thursday identified them as Joseph Scaccia Sr., 67, of Allen, and Joseph Scaccia Jr., 41, of Wellsville. Investigator Jack Migliore said they were found by a neighbor on the elder Scaccia’s West Hill Road property. The enclosed trailer they were in was parked on the lawn, adjacent to the driveway. “They were two guys who were overcome by what appeared to be carbon monoxide while working on a drag race car in an enclosed car hauler/car trailer — the ones you see when people go to race tracks,”?Migliore said. “They were found by a neighbor who contacted 911.” Migliore said state police got the call at around 4:10 p.m. Wednesday. Scaccia Sr. and Scaccia Jr. were deceased when police arrived on scene. “There’s no sign of foul play. It appears that it was an unfortunate accident,”?he said. “The victims were removed by Allegany County Coroner Maynard Baker. They were transported to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office,”?Migliore said. “Our preliminary investigation is complete at this time, pending further information that might be developed through the post-mortem examination that would be completed by the medical examiner’s office. They do whatever they need to do and they let us know what they found. If they’re checking for carbon monoxide, I anticipate it taking longer than a day or two.?It depends on how busy they are.” Also responding to the scene were a Belfast ambulance crew and county Director of Emergency Services and Fire Coordinator Jeff Luckey. County dispatchers said everyone was back in service by 6:55 p.m. “I?responded because I?was notified from the 911 center that they had a possible double fatal from carbon monoxide,”?Luckey said. “I?responded to assist the Belfast ambulance any way they needed help. If they needed some guidance or resources or were having a tough time with the call, I wanted to be there to assist them.?Their crew handled it professionally and I?didn’t provide any resource or assistance to them.” Luckey said he provided additional lighting while state police investigated. Wellsville Elementary School Principal Dean Giopulos said four of William Scaccia Jr.’s children are students in the school. The fifth child, the youngest, is not yet in the elementary school. “All of the children, with the exception of the youngest child have been in our school since they were school-aged. They’re wonderful, wonderful children,”?he said Thursday night. “They try hard and they aim to please. “Our hearts go out to that family. The oldest child now is in sixth grade. They’re lovely kids,”?Giopulos said. “That’s got to be reflective of who their parents are.” The principal said he told the Scaccia family it can turn to the district for help if it needs to do so. “We want to be there and are going to do everything we can to support the children and their family,”?he said. “There are counselors, there are people who are available to help them.”
