Monroe, LA – A couple was badly injured in a home explosion sending them to the hospital; with second and third degree burns.

The couple’s daughter is in complete shock.

“My kids were begging to stay the night and something kept telling me no, they need to come home”, Daughter Sharon Cook said.

Sharon Cook still can’t believe what her parents house looks like;

her kids were almost inside.

“If I would have let them spend the night; from the damages I saw when I went back, they wouldn’t of made it”, Daughter Sharon Cook said.

Melba Sykes and Michael Sykes were fast asleep when their home exploded.

Witnesses said Michael Sykes was the first to get out, but had to turn around to save his disabled wife Melba..

Parts of the roof did fall on top of her.

Melba suffered second degree burns and Michael ended up with third degree burns.

“She has burns all over her face, all on her arm, all down her left leg, and 20 percent of her body is burned. When I walked in there they had my dad completely wrapped from head to toe.” Daughter Sharon Cook said.

Tonight they’re at the LSU burn unit in Shreveport.

The Monroe Fire Chief said he believes a natural gas leak may have caused the explosion, but can’t be positive.

They are working with the gas company Atmos Energy to figure out what caused the explosion.
