Sicklerville, NJ – A South Jersey family was hospitalized overnight after becoming ill from carbon monoxide fumes.
Winslow Township police said emergency responders were called to a home on Hidden Hollow Lane shortly before 3:30 a.m. for a report of an unconscious woman.
When authorities arrived, they found the adult woman and a 7-year-old child unconscious, and the adult man who called 911 also briefly passed out, officials said.
All three regained consciousness after receiving treatment but were transported to Virtua Hospital for observation.
Police said crews detected a high level of carbon monoxide at the home, potentially from a faulty heater.
As the weather gets colder, authorities are urging people to check their heating equipment and make sure carbon-monoxide detectors are installed and working.
The colorless, odorless gas can be deadly. Early symptoms of carbon-monoxide poisoning include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Symptoms of more severe poisoning are mental confusion, vomiting, loss of muscular coordination and loss of consciousness.
