DeKalb County, IL – Three area fire departments responded to an apparent propane gas explosion in the basement of a home at 3870 West Sandwich Road that occurred Wednesday afternoon around 4:20.

The two residents of the home were not injured.

The homeowner told DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputies that he had a company out working on his propane tank in the front yard a couple of hours before the explosion.

The homeowner believes there was propane in the basement and when the sump pump turned on, it possibly caused the explosion.

According to fire officials, the house may be a total loss as the foundation buckled and the kitchen floor rose up a foot.

Windows on the house were knocked off.

Fire departments from Sandwich, Somonauk and Little Rock-Fox responded. The Newark Fire Department was in route but was sent back.

The American Red Cross also responded to the scene to assist the residents.

The investigation into the explosion continues.
