Waxahachie, TX – A possible natural gas leak caused an early morning explosion at Liberty Dialysis in Waxahachie off U.S. Highway 77 behind Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, said Waxahachie Fire Chief Ricky Boyd on scene.

The Waxahachie Fire Department responded to the call at 6:15 a.m., Boyd said. The explosion caused a small fire and happened in the building’s water room, which helps make sure the dialysis process is safe and clean, said nurse manager Cindy Roberts. She received the news at 6:11 a.m. Dialysis is the medical process of removing blood from an artery (as that of a kidney patient), purifying it, adding vital substances and returning it to a vein.

The incident happened about an hour before the dialysis building was expected to open at 7 p.m. Now it might be a month or longer before it opens again if the building isn’t torn down, said Boyd.

No one was injured, but two people were at the front of the building when the explosion occurred in the back. The facility can treat 12 patients at any given time, Roberts said.

The businesses is coordinating with patients to transfer them to a new Liberty Dialysis building in Mansfield in the mean time, Roberts said.

The explosion is still under investigation at this time, Boyd said.
