Oshkosh, WI – The Hilton Garden Inn, 1355 W. 20th Ave., was evacuated early Monday morning due to a carbon monoxide leak, said Oshkosh Fire Chief Tim Franz.

Firefighters responded to a call at 4:52 a.m. reporting that a carbon monoxide detector was sounding. After entering the building, their meters indicated high levels of the gas inside the hotel. Additional resources were called in, and everyone was evacuated from the building, which had 41 occupied rooms.

As people left the hotel, they were checked for symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. No one showed any signs of being affected by the gas, Franz said.

“Because of the dangers of carbon monoxide, our number one concern was anyone suffering from the effects of that, if anyone was ill from that exposure,” Franz said. “So that was one of the main reasons we had so many resources there.”

The department had 19 personnel respond, along with five ambulances, Franz said.

The leak was traced to a mechanical and laundry area. Firefighters shut down the hotel’s systems and ventilated the building.

They cleared the scene at 8:42 a.m., and around 2 p.m., Franz received a call from the hotel to let him know that repairs had been made and it was back up and running.
