Litchfield, NH – One person was killed and another hospitalized following a carbon monoxide leak in a home in Litchfield, N.H., on Wednesday night, officials said.
Litchfield police and fire crews responded to a welfare check at 22 Moose Hollow Rd. around 6 p.m. Wednesday. A fight had been heard in the home earlier in the week and no one had been seen in a few days, prompting the visit, the state fire marshal’s office said.
Upon entering the home, authorities detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide and found an unidentified man who had died and an unidentified woman in critical condition.
A carbon monoxide situation was reported, and the woman was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center for treatment.
The home had recently been foreclosed and the previous owner, Jamie Badeau, was apparently living in the home after it failed to sell at foreclosure auction. Power had also been cut off from the house around 10 days ago, although the home remained occupied, the fire marshal said.
The fire marshal’s office did not confirm if Badeau was one of the vicitims of the carbon monoxide leak. An autopsy is set to be performed.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the leak.
