Houston, TX – Firefighters believe carbon monoxide gas leaked into a southwest Houston apartment building, killing one resident and making several others sick. Paramedics rushed 8 victims to the hospital.

Firefighters were initially called to the Aberdeen Apartments at 9901 Richmond after two residents complained of being ill. Once they suspected that it was caused by CO poisoning, firefighters evacuated several families from the complex; they found the deceased male while conducting a search of the building.

Investigators haven’t determined what caused deadly gas to leak into the apartments.

Residents said the entire complex has been without hot water for several days. It’s not clear if the problems are related.

Management told residents they cannot go back into the building for 24-48 hours.

When KHOU attempted to get a comment from the leasing office at Aberdeen Apartments, a woman identifying herself as an employee initially denied anything happened. She then said she couldn’t comment and refused to give a corporate media contact.

Later, another apartment employee told members of the media that the complex would assist displaced families find places to stay. He said management was unsure what caused the CO leak.
