Felton, DE – An explosion and fire near Felton where four dogs perished Tuesday was caused by leaking propane gas inside the home, state fire investigators said today.
The fire was reported by a neighbor shortly before 2 p.m. at a two-story home in the 1200 block of Peach Basket Road, said Chief Deputy Fire Marshal B. Scott Bullock.
When firefighters arrived, they found the home with heavy flames and part of it collapsed.
One occupant was taken to Kent General Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Four dogs were found dead inside the home by investigators.
Bullock said that the leaking propane gas inside the home was ignited by a pilot light from another appliance, triggering the explosion.
Damage was estimated at $200,000.
The residents are staying with other family members who live nearby, Bullock said.
