Hughestown, PA – A Hughestown couple had a harrowing escape from their home after nearly succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning Monday.

John Langhorne, 75, called 911 at 2:51 p.m. Monday to report that he found his wife, Beverly Langhorne, 74, cold and unresponsive in the basement of their home, according to Hughestown police. Langhorne said he was about to pass out from the fumes himself and was unable to get out of the home on his own, police said.

Hughestown police officers arrived at the home, where they found the Langhornes “in a room filled with heavy carbon monoxide fumes.” John Langhorne was lying on the floor, while his wife was unresponsive in a chair, according to police,

Officers evacuated both victims from the home. The Langhornes were taken by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment. A third person in the home, 35-year-old Laura DeStefano, was treated at the scene and released.

Members of the Hughestown Fire Department confirmed high levels of carbon monoxide in the home, apparently caused by a faulty furnace, police said.

Responding agencies included Hughestown police, Hughestown Fire Department, Duryea Fire Company, Pittston Medic, Avoca Ambulance and Geisinger Ambulance.
