Hazleton, PA – One man is dead after he breathed in a fatal amount of carbon monoxide gasses.

Carlos A. Minaya Castillo, 49, of Hazleton was found deceased in the bathroom of his home after his wife heard a loud thump around 4AM Sunday morning. Upon going downstairs, Castillo’s wife found him unconscious on the floor and called police.

Hazleton police responded to the residence on Alter Street to find Castillo’s Acura MDX running in the family’s garage, still running, with the garage door closed and a strong smell of carbon monoxide in the residence.

Police acted quickly and removed Castillo’s wife and 11 year old child from the residence to prevent any further harm to the family.

Castillo’s wife said she heard her husband pull into the garage at 2AM and close the garage, but that she did not hear the vehicle turn off before she fell back asleep.

After the family was cleared from the scene, Hazleton Fire Department was on scene and checked to make sure all dangerous gasses were cleared out before continuing the investigation.

“This appears to be a tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.” Hazleton Chief of Police Jerry Speziale said.

Four Hazleton City police officers were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital and treated for carbon monoxide inhalation.
