Meridian, MS – An explosion that killed two people over the weekend is still being investigated. The home of Billy and Janelle Alexander exploded Saturday night killing both of them. Officials say propane caused the explosion.

Chuck Sanders with Sanders gas in Meridian says it is very important that people have their gas appliances checked.

“Most appliances ask you to have that appliance checked yearly. Have a tune-up done on it, make sure that it’s burning correctly, make sure it’s operating and all of the safety procedures are in place,” Sanders explains.

Sanders says that no one should do anything to alter a gas line in anyway. He says it is imperative you have a professional do it.

“As far as the homeowner doing their own work, it’s just not a good idea. When you’re working with gas or electricity call a qualified agency. That’s the answer and the only answer,” Sanders says.

Sanders says all gases have a very distinct smell that should identify that there is a problem, but he recommends getting a gas detector for your home just to be on the safe side. He says since the explosion in Newton County, many people have been calling to have their homes checked.
