Newport, MN – A Newport man and his dog died Friday when they were overcome by carbon monoxide.

Robin Hiley, 60, and his Labrador Jack were found in the garage of Hiley’s home at 660 Sixth Ave. about 4:30 p.m. Despite efforts of a rescue crew, neither he nor the dog could be revived.

Hiley had apparently been operating a gas-powered stump grinder with the garage door down. Police believe that he and the dog were killed by carbon monoxide, an odorless gas released by the exhaust of engines and furnaces.

“It was purely accidental,” said Newport Police Chief Curt Montgomery.
