Coconut Creek, FL – Broward County’s emergency dispatch center here had an emergency of its own Saturday afternoon.

Overheated batteries in the information technology room affected the air so that 19 people in the dispatch center, 4900 W. Copans Road, had to be evacuated at 3:30 p.m., said Jeff Gary, fire marshal for Coconut Creek.

All were evaluated at the scene and 10 of them were taken to area hospitals for further evaluation, he said.

A sulphur smell permeated the premises and air testing revealed a high level of sulphur in the air, Gary said. Some dispatch workers complained of nausea, but no one was seriously injured, Gary said.

County dispatch services are currently being run out of the 911 centers in Sunrise and Pembroke Pines. Gary said he expects that Coconut Creek’s center would reopen Sunday morning.
