Crawford County, MI – Firefighters saved a woman, her dog and two cats from carbon monoxide poisoning.
The incident happened Saturday morning in Crawford County.
According to the Frederic Fire Department, Firefighter Paramedic Trudeau and Firefighter EMT Lee responded to a carbon monoxide emergency at a house in Frederic.
The fire department says Trudeau and Lee entered the home with a four gas monitor when they and found the woman, the monitor showed extremely high levels of carbon monoxide.
Together, Trudeau and Lee performed an emergency rescue of the woman, moving her to fresh air and into the ambulance waiting outside.
The woman was taken to Alpena General Hospital due to the extremely high levels of carbon monoxide found in the home. Alpena General hospital is equipped with a hyperbaric chamber to remove carbon monoxide from the victim’s bloodstream.
We’re told the woman is doing better.
The Frederic Fire Department’s engine company arrived on scene later with air packs on Firefighters Starr and Owens. Starr and Owens then went into the house to search for the woman’s pets.
The fire department says one dog was removed from the house and seemed to be okay within minutes of being outside in the fresh air.
Firefighters found one cat and brought him to Captain Swander who was waiting out side with oxygen tank and mask. The fire department says the cat was in distress and needed help.
Firefighters reentered the home and found the second cat that was nearly unconscious. The cat was then brought out to a team of firefighters who were waiting to treat the two cats.
Both cats and the dog have reportedly made a full recovery but will be monitored throughout the next few days.
Chief Pratt commended the fast actions of his Firefighters and credit them with saving the life of the victim and the pets. Deputy Fire Chief Goscicki said this should be a reminder to everyone to check your CO detectors to insure there working and if you don’t have one you should go out and purchase one it could save your life or the lives of a loved ones.
The source of the carbon monoxide leak is still under investigation.
