Livingston County, MI – One of Tyrone Township’s oldest homes was destroyed this morning when a propane gas leak ignited a blaze, a fire official said.

Chief Adam Carroll of the Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority said fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the propane leak and the ignition source of the fire that destroyed a home in the 7300 block of Mabley Hill Road, north of Germany Road.

A neighbor reported the fire just after 9 a.m. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the home 70 percent involved in fire.

“Most of the windows and doors had been blown out or distorted,” Carroll said. “Some objects, for instance the iron … door to the basement, was blown 30 feet from the house into the yard.”

Carroll estimated it took firefighters about 45-60 minutes to get the fire under control. However, firefighters from five departments remained on scene until almost 4 p.m. extinguishing hot spots and cleaning up.

Fortunately, the homeowners had left for work prior to the explosion. One firefighter was injured by a nail while removing shingle.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Howell, Brighton, Fenton, and Highland fire departments. Members with the county’s Disaster Assistance Response Team also were on scene.
