Georgetown, SC – Firefighters say a propane leak most likely caused an explosion that destroyed a city food stand last week.
At about 5:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, Georgetown City Fire Department teams responded to Wings N’ Things, 101 N. Merriman Road, to find the structure mostly destroyed by the blast.
Chief Charlie Cribb said crews were dispatched after a passing motorist called 911 upon hearing what sounded like an explosion. Firefighters arrived, Cribb said, to find the blast had caused significant damage to the building.
Despite the damage, Cribb said his crews were able to contain the subsequent fire in short order.
There was a very small amount of fire and some hot spots, Cribb said, but everything was contained and nobody was hurt.
Although fire teams were able to quell the resulting fire, Cribb said the blast had already destroyed most of the structure. Because the damage was so extensive, Cribb said, investigators were limited in their ability to determine what caused the fire. Despite that, Cribb said a suspected propane leak seemed like the most probable cause.
It was fed by propane to fuel the cookers inside, he said. It looks like it was probably a gas leak.
Cribb added there was no indication the explosion resulted from anything suspicious.
