Stephens City, VA – Investigators are at the scene Tuesday of an explosion that destroyed a home in Stephens City and seriously injuring an occupant.

Frederick County Chief Fire Marshal Dennis Linaburg says the explosion – which happened at about eight o’clock Monday night – was probably caused by a natural gas leak.

Stephens City Deputy Fire Chief Steven Ritter says the unidentified injured man, who’s about 55 years old, was taken to a burn unit at a hospital in Washington, D.C.

Ritter says that seven homes around the blast area were damaged by flying debris.

Washington Gas spokesman Tim Sergeant says crews haven’t found a gas leak outside the home or along the gas main in the neighborhood. But he says those tests don’t eliminate the possibility that natural gas triggered the blast.
