Lauderdale County, MS – Two people from Lauderdale County are continuing to recover after an explosion at their mobile home Sunday night.
It happened around 5:30 on Vimville Causeyville Road. Steven Pearce says his daughter and son-in-law were trying to ignite the pilot light on the stove when the explosion happened.
Robbie and Jasmine Shelton were taken to a burn center. Both are expected to be okay but have severe burns. Robbie served in the Navy for 11 years. Jasmine is nearly two months pregnant with their child. Pearce says because his daughter is pregnant, the hospital won’t opt for a skin graft at this time.
Fire coordinator Allan Dover says the Southeast Fire Protection District and Russell Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the scene after they heard someone was inside the home.
“It always puts a heightened alertness to us because anytime you have one explosion, you can always have multiple explosions,” Dover says. “But our main concern was to try and get there and do some kind of interaction to make sure this person was able to survive.”
Dover says the fired was determined to be accidental – caused by a propane leak.
