Cleveland, OH – A Cleveland family of six was hospitalized early Thursday after elevated levels of carbon monoxide were detected in their home.
A 26-year-old man in the house on the 1100 block of East 60th Street was transported to St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in serious condition, according to Cleveland EMS commissioner Nicole Carlton.
A 26-year-old man was also hospitalized at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in stable condition. A 24-year-old woman and three children were transported to MetroHealth Medical Center in stable condition, officials said.
The Cleveland Division of Fire detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide when they went to the home about 4 a.m.
The family’s carbon monoxide detector went off Wednesday night, but they ignored the alarm and unplugged it, Carlton said.
“With carbon monoxide detectors, you may believe it’s a false alarm, but it’s always good to err on the side of caution and have it checked out,” Carlton said.
The Cleveland Division of Fire would not release information about the cause of the leak.
Cleveland Fire Chief Patrick Kelly is holding a press conference Thursday at 2 p.m. to address this incident and raise public awareness of carbon monoxide leaks.
