Grand Island, NY- A family of four escaped death when they were talked out of their home, which was full of deadly carbon monoxide gas.

Around 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Mackenzie Hassan, 31, called for help from the Grand Island Fire Company when she found her son, 6, unconscious in his bedroom. Dispatchers instructed her to get everyone out. Hassan, the 6 year old and an infant, 11 days, were all brought outside to wait for emergency crews.

Firefighters measured the carbon monoxide levels inside, determining they were 460 parts per million, enough to threaten the lives of everyone inside. Crews also determined the CO detector in the house was not working properly.

Hassan and the two boys were taken to Buffalo Women & Children’s Hospital for treatment. The father refused treatment.

The exact cause of the CO buildup is under investigation. National Fuel is checking the home.
