Conemaugh Township, PA – Six people, including two children, were rushed to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown early Wednesday after first responders were called to a residence at 1702 Moonlite Park Road in Conemaugh Township for a carbon monoxide incident.

The children were later flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, according to Conemaugh Township police.

The carbon monoxide caused Jerome Volunteer Fire Co. instruments to spike at 500, meaning the amount of the toxic gas in the residence was “very high,” said Jerome Fire Chief Russ Miller. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless.

The furnace caused the problem, he said.

“An exhaust flue pipe was separated from the gas furnace,” Miller said.

One of the children was unresponsive, while another child began crying and screaming and woke up the adults. They realized everyone was sick, so they called for help, he said. The incident was reported shortly after 4 a.m.

Besides the Jerome Volunteer Fire Co. and Conemaugh Township police, Conemaugh Township EMS assisted at the scene, according to Somerset County Control.
