Chicopee, MA – Some residents of a Chicopee apartment building are being checked out at the hospital following a carbon monoxide leak early Monday afternoon.

Chicopee Deputy Fire Chief Wayne LeMay told 22News that a clogged water heater caused the leak at the six-family apartment building at 38 Front Street. LeMay said that on the first floor of the home, there were carbon monoxide levels of 30 parts per million, while on the second floor levels were at 90 parts per million. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, most people notice symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning at concentrations of above 70 ppm, while deaths often occur at concentrations of 150 ppm or above.

LeMay said that the blood gas levels of residents of the building were low, and that the residents were going to bring themselves to the hospital to be checked-out, rather than going by ambulance.
