Shadeland, IN – A broken furnace caused one Shadeland woman to be hospitalized due to carbon monoxide poisoning Monday afternoon.

According to Shadeland Fire Chief Dennis Fleming, the resident of 1510 W. County Road 550 South was having trouble with her furnace and called a relative to help relight it.

Fleming said the woman called the same relative several hours later, reporting that she did not feel well. The relative took her to a hospital, and she tested positive for carbon monoxide poisoning.

The U.S. Department of Labor limits carbon monoxide exposure to 50 parts per million per eight hours, and employees must be removed if concentration exceeds 100 parts per million.

Fleming said initial detectors read at 280 parts per million. Once his crews fully inspected the home, they detected up to 500 parts per million.
