Transylvania County, NC – A child is dead and his father is in the hospital after carbon monoxide poisoning, Wednesday.

Deputies responded to a home right behind Cherryfield Baptist Church around 12:30 p.m. after receiving a call for an unresponsive person.

They found two people — a 40-year-old man and his 13-year-old son, who was already dead.

“The whole family is distraught,” Det. Sgt. Garreth Frady with the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office said. “They’re extremely upset and rightfully so.”

The man is being transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for further treatment.

Investigators believe they were heating the house using propane tanks and possibly fell asleep and were poisoned with carbon monoxide.

Deputies say they were discovered by the man’s mother.

When she could not get a hold of them, she showed up to the home but could not get inside because of a chain lock.

“She contacted another family member and they broke the chain and went in and found the father unresponsive and found his son deceased,” Frady said.
