Springdale, AR – Officials in northwest Arkansas said a carbon monoxide leak forced an evacuation at a junior high school on Monday.

The Springdale fire department was called in this morning after students and staffed started to smell natural gas at Central junior high.

Officials said new heating and air units were installed at the school this summer, and one of the outlets had gotten disconnected, leaking a small amount of carbon monoxide.

The leak was repaired and students returned to the classroom.

“It becomes important at point 9 and I think it was at point 5. We wanted to make sure that we got the kids out and put them in a safe environment over in the Lowes room. Got it reconnected,” said Jared Cleveland, Springdale deputy superintendent.

School officials said no students or staff members were hurt in the incident.
