Westhampton Beach, NY – A Westhampton Beach apartment building was evacuated for roughly an hour on Tuesday afternoon because of a carbon monoxide leak.
Westhampton Beach Fire Department Assistant Chief Billy Dalton said 27 people were evacuated from the Oak Street apartment complex after 1 p.m. and prohibited from reentering their homes until the toxic gas had been cleared.
By 2:30 p.m. most of the residents were back inside their homes except for two individuals who were still receiving medical treatment on the scene from Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance personnel after reportedly feeling sick.
The cause of the leak was not immediately clear and Mr. Dalton said the owner of the building was not present at the time of the incident.
Along with the fire and ambulance departments, the Westhampton Beach Village Police and the Southampton Town Fire Marshal also sent representatives to the scene. National Grid was on hand to further investigate the issue.
