Levenworth, KS – Leavenworth residents spent the night at a hotel after carbon monoxide was found in their home, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The incident was reported at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday at 930 Cheyenne St., Leavenworth fire Capt. Mark DeMaranville said.

Firefighters responded to the home because of a report of a strange odor.

DeMaranville said carbon monoxide is odorless, but the toxic gas was detected inside the residence.

He said firefighters initially had a carbon monoxide reading of 14 parts per million. He does not know how high the carbon monoxide levels reached.

DeMaranville said Leavenworth firefighters typically use their self-contained breathing apparatuses to protect themselves when they detect carbon monoxide readings of at least 35 parts per million.

The American Red Cross provided temporary lodging for the home’s residents at a local hotel.

DeMaranville said he did not know what caused the carbon monoxide build up.

Kansas Gas Service responded to the residence as well.
