Aberdeen, SD – Residents at Mother Joseph Manor were finishing up with breakfast and getting ready for church Sunday morning when they were brought outside for a facility-wide evacuation.

Mike O’Keefe, vice president of Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, said residents were evacuated as a precaution when there was a carbon monoxide alert.

Aberdeen Fire and Rescue responded to the call at 7:30 a.m. According to O’Keefe, the fire department was there for a couple hours checking out the facility. The cause of the alert was an exhaust fan failure in the kitchen.

The evacuation took place when some residents were having breakfast, O’Keefe said.

“They had to miss church service, but we did bring everyone back into the facility and held communion,” O’Keefe said.
