Takoma Park, MD – An elderly couple in Takoma Park is fortunate to be alive after high amounts of carbon monoxide was found in their home Tuesday at 6:00 a.m.
According to Tommy Reid, the couples son, the unidentified man in his 60s, was getting ready for work when he felt dizzy and passed out. His wife called 911 to report her husband was suffering a seizure, she suffered a headache.
Montgomery Co. Fire and EMS officials showed up to the home with carbon monoxide detectors attached to their bags. When they entered the home, the detectors went crazy.
After going through the home and getting a good read of carbon monoxide levels inside the home, there were 600 parts per million of carbon monoxide found. To give a better understanding of just how large of an amount that is, 30 parts per million according to officials is considered an “unsafe and dangerous” level.
Montgomery Co. Fire and EMS officials added that there was not a working carbon monoxide detector in the home, and that the wife called 911 in the nick of time.
The couple was taken to a local hospital to treat non-life threatening injuries.
Crews will return Tuesday to make sure the victims home and other homes in the neighborhood have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
