Elkmont, AL – Limestone County maintenance and child nutrition staff are working to fix a malfunctioning oven that created a carbon monoxide backup at Elkmont High School this morning.

A worker in the school’s kitchen began feeling ill around 9 a.m., according to a release from Karen Tucker, director of technology and public relations at Limestone County Schools. Upon inspection, it was discovered that an exhaust fan on on one of the school’s ovens had stopped working, creating a backup of carbon monoxide in a small area of the kitchen.

School nurses treated the employee immediately and it was determined that no additional treatment would be needed. At no point were students at risk to the exposure, Tucker said.

The cafeteria will remain closed for the day while the staff works to resolve the issue. Meals will be transported in from other schools to feed the Elkmont students.
