Oklahoma City, OK – The Oklahoma medical examiner’s office used dental records to positively identify a child killed in an explosion and fire at the home where he lived with his grandparents.

Tyler Spears, 6, died of carbon monoxide poisoning and burns, the medical examiner’s office said.

Authorities say they have unconfirmed reports that Tyler’s grandparents had smelled natural gas for several days before Tuesday’s explosion and fire.

UPDATE 10:30 a.m. April 22, 2014:

A child killed in an early morning explosion and fire has been identified as Tyler Spears, 6, Oklahoma City Fire Department officials said Tuesday morning.

His body was found after an explosion and fire destroyed the southwest Oklahoma City home where he lived with his grandparents.

Unconfirmed reports indicate a natural gas explosion could have sparked the blaze in the house near SW 23 and Blackwelder.

An elderly woman was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital in stable condition, said Fire Department Major Tammy McKinney.

7:00 a.m. April 22, 2014:

A six-year-old boy is dead after an explosion and fire Tuesday, fire officials say.

The fire, near SW 23 and Blackwelder, was reported shortly after 5 a.m.

Investigators say it appears the explosion caused the fire, but there’s no word what caused the explosion.
