Avalon, NJ- A family of four were hospitalized Sunday after carbon monoxide leaked from a pool heater in their garage and traveled upstairs into the apartment where the family slept, according to firefighters.

Emergency response arrived at the residence after a call at 5:20 a.m. about the family experiencing sickness including nausea, vomiting and dizziness, and transported the four members to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Avalon Fire Chief Edward Dean said the leak could have been found earlier if the family had a detector.

“In some cases people are not awakened by their symptoms while they are exposed to carbon monoxide and the results are often tragic. This should serve as a reminder for all property owners and landlords to make sure their units have working fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors,” Dean said.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and toxic gas that is impossible to see, smell, or taste.Carbon monoxide can be deadly before you are even aware that it exists in your home.
