Bremerton, WA – A dog-walker with a good sense of smell might have saved a Bremerton woman’s life this morning.
He smelled gas in the neighborhood and called the gas company. A Cascade Natural Gas worker found a home on Sunset Avenue NE in Bremerton that had 6 percent reading at the front door. He immediately shut-off the gas and called 911.
There was enough gas inside the 73-year-old woman’s home to cause an explosion that would have leveled it. The reading inside the home was 16 percent. Anything between 5 and 15 percent can cause an explosion.
“She is lucky to have an observant neighbor,” Ileana LiMarzi with Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue said. “This could have had a completely different outcome.”
The woman was treated at the scene, and she’s okay. Investigators found all four burners on her gas stove were turned to high. She said she must have left them on accidentally after cleaning.
Seven homes were evacuated for about four hours as the gas dissipated.
