Lexington, KY – Firefighters evacuated hotel guests after they detected high levels of carbon monoxide inside Wednesday morning.

Officials say a manager at the Homewood Suites on Ruccio Way noticed a strange odor on upper floors and called 911. Firefighters pulled the fire alarm and cleared out at least 20 people from the upper floors when they detected high CO readings.

Major Mark Harvey said firefighters got readings of over 200 parts per million in the hallway.

“Thats a lot of carbon monoxide. And in a building we’re not sure that they have a continuous carbon monoxide monitoring system. So if this were to happen in the middle of the night, you may never know it until it’s too late,” he said.

Firefighters say the manager’s quick action kept everybody safe.

Homewood Suites issued a statement.

“The hotel noticed a situation, took care of it and operations are back to normal.”

Officials didn’t release any information on the source of the carbon monoxide.
