Allentown, PA – At least three people with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning were sent to the hospital for observation Sunday afternoon after a malfunctioning furnace raised the level of the gas in a row home in east Allentown, according to officials.
No serious injures were reported, but emergency personnel tested all six homes in the row as a precaution.
Police were summoned to 322 E. Union St. about 3:30 p.m. for reports of several people sickened by high carbon monoxide levels. A paramedic at the scene told residents Orin Dabney and Dwayne Johns that the carbon monoxide reading in the house was “extremely high” and that they should be checked at the hospital, and they agreed.
At least one other person also was taken for observation, and others may have suffered minor symptoms, officials said.
The problem eventually was traced to a furnace malfunction, officials said.
