Edison, NJ – WCBS TV – A gas explosion leveled a vacant house in Edison on Tuesday afternoon, damaging two neighboring homes and tying up traffic on a busy county road.

No one was injured in the blast, which occurred just after 3 p.m. on Plainfield Avenue, said Lt. Stephen Staback of the Edison police. The precise cause of the blast was under investigation, Staback said.

The powerful explosion, which was felt for blocks, forced police to close part of Plainfield Avenue, a major artery through Middlesex County, snarling traffic during Tuesday’s evening rush hour.

The two houses on either side of the vacant house were also destroyed, and some residents were evacuated, Staback said.

Ten years ago a spectacular gas explosion in Edison injured 100 people, destroyed eight buildings and forced 1,500 people from their homes when a pipeline was ruptured by digging.
