On the morning of August 12, 2025, emergency crews from the D.C. Fire and EMS Department were dispatched to a parking garage on the 1900 block of E Street NW after reports of dangerously high carbon monoxide levels. Investigators determined the gas buildup stemmed from power washers being used in an enclosed, poorly ventilated section of the garage. The lack of airflow allowed carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas, to accumulate rapidly, creating hazardous conditions for those working inside.

Five people were evaluated for possible carbon monoxide poisoning at the scene, with two requiring hospitalization for further treatment. After ventilating the area and restoring safe air quality, officials confirmed the immediate danger had passed. The incident highlights the risks posed by fuel-powered equipment in enclosed spaces and underscores the importance of adequate ventilation and carbon monoxide monitoring in preventing potentially life-threatening exposure.
