Fulton County, GA – Fire officials have identified the victim in an explosion in Chattahoochee Hills that happened Tuesday night in a home off Cochran Mill Road.
Chattahoochee Hills Fire Chief Greg Brett said 83-year-old Charles “Chuck” Miller was killed in the large explosion that was felt across the southern metro area.
Chief Brett said the house was “obliterated” after the explosion. Fire officials are still working to determine how it happened but they attributed the blast to a propane vapor explosion from the basement. They don’t believe the tank exploded.
The blast was so large houses in nearby counties could feel it.
Brett said this type of explosion is “very unusual.” The State Fire Marshall will be at the site of the explosion on Wednesday morning to investigate.
Miller was the only person in the home when it happened. Officials told 11Alive that Miller’s wife recently passed away. Chief Brett knew Miller personally and said he was a good guy and a “five star cook.”
Members of the South Fulton County Georgia: Problems and Solutions group shared their condolences for Miller early Wednesday morning. One member described Miller as a “great community leader” in his post. The member went on to write, ” I personally enjoyed the photos he posted of cakes, cookies, pies, and roasted chicken he whipped up in his kitchen. He certainly will be missed.”
