Yonkers, NY – Dangerously high carbon monoxide levels shut down the Yonkers Metro-North train station Monday evening.
Officials say that around 9:30 p.m., a strong smell of gas was reported, and three MTA officers became ill with headaches and nausea.
With the Yonkers police and fire departments assisting, MTA fire crews tested and discovered high levels of carbon monoxide.
The station was evacuated, and trains in both directions bypassed the station.
MTA officials say there was an issue with the boiler in the building. Once it was fixed, the carbon monoxide levels in the building were tested again and found to be normal.
The three officers were taken to the hospital for observation and are now fine. No customers were affected.
Commuters say they’re happy the issue was fixed before the morning commute. “Everything smells fine so far, and I’m glad the doors are open and everything is airing out,” says Kimberly Dadom, of Yonkers.
