Genoa, IL- Six employees at a pallet sales business were taken to area hospitals and another three were treated at the scene after fire crews and ambulances from across the area responded Thursday to a carbon monoxide alert.

Genoa-Kingston Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Ryan Stoffregen said when his crew arrived about 12:30 p.m. at Cleary Pallet Sales, 32570 Genoa Road, several employees had reported having the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

“The main symptoms include headache and nausea, along with being tired or drowsy,” he said.

Every one of the nine employees working in the facility Thursday were examined by paramedics.

Ambulances from Genoa-Kingston, Sycamore, Marengo, Huntley, DeKalb, Cortland, Pingree Grove and Burlington responded to the scene. Stoffregen said that was a typical response.

“Because we had so many patients, we asked for ambulances from the surrounding area because we didn’t want to deplete DeKalb County,” he said.

Stoffregen said it is suspected there was a problem in the facility’s ventilation system that caused the build up of carbon monoxide.

Crews from Belvidere, Cortland, Union and Maple Park also assisted in the call.
