Matteson Township, MI – Fire caused by a propane tank explosion destroyed a home at 535 Babcock Road Thursday night.

The call – at 9.m. – found that the 20 mph winds with snow had pushed the fire from the living room, where it started, throughout the structure by the time the first truck arrived.

Union City fire was called for mutual aid. Together, for four hours, the departments ferried 20,000 gallons of water to the farm site to put out the fire. They had to return Friday to douse hot spots.

The loss on the Steve Wallo Farm was estimated at $60,000 for the building and $20,000 for contents.

Michigan State Police provided traffic control on Babcock Road. Lifecare was at the scene to treat two firemen who received minor injuries.

Branch County Victims Service Unit was also called to assist.
