Talladega, AL – It’s race weekend coming up in Talladega and hundreds will be camped out over the weekend.
But if you’re going to be in your RV or camper, it’s a time to think about the possible dangers that come with it.
“We started end of September in New Jersey,” Nathan Kendrick said.
Now, four weeks later, Kendrick has made it to the south here in Alabama.
My family and I decided to take the opportunity to drive cross-country, see a bunch of friends and family we haven’t seen in a while,” Kendrick said.
He’s set-up at the Oak Mt. State Park campgrounds in Pelham. And the next stop is Florida. He’s set-up at the Oak Mt. State Park campgrounds in Pelham.
This time of the year more people are packing up their RVs and campers. But a fun family road trip can easily turn into a tragedy.
Two years ago at a race in Talladega, a man from Tennessee died after a carbon monoxide leak inside his RV.
It’s a sad reminder of why folks need to take precautions.
“Especially with tailgating because of a lot of people have generators,” said Ann Slattery with the Regional Poison Control Center.
Slattery says carbon monoxide is a silent killer because it’s odorless. You don’t know it’s there.
“Usually it starts off with a headache, then as the amount increases in your system there’s shortness of breath, could lead to seizures, coma and possibly death,” Slattery said.
Kendrick not only has a carbon monoxide detector, but also detectors for smoke and a propane leak.He also makes sure his wife and kids know how to use the emergency exits.
“This is my house right now on the road. I’ve got two little kids in here so that’s my priority. My concern is making sure they’re safe,” he explained.
