Antis Township, PA – One man is recovering after a propane tank exploded inside his home Friday.

It happened at a duplex at 1821 W. Ninth Street around 2 p.m. Friday.

Fire department officials are now using this accident as a lesson for others.

David McCloskey, Excelsior Volunteer Fire Company Fire Chief, says it could have been a lot worse.

“What we found was a flexible connector feeding the gas stove was actually cracked,” he explains. “So it was leaking and when he went to light the stove, it just ignited and there was an explosion.”

The explosion rocked the entire house, according to the injured man’s wife and daughter, who were also home at the time. They weren’t hurt.

The damage inside the home is extensive, especially in the kitchen where the self-installation was happening.

The blast rocked the home causing the front living room window, the room furthest from the kitchen, to blow out.

The man was taken to UPMC Altoona and according to family members, should be released Saturday. He did receive some injuries, including burns.
