Wethersfield, CT – Four people were hospitalized after an explosion at a home in Wethersfield, according to fire officials.
Wethersfield firefighters responded to a house in the 200-block of Amherst Street at 5 p.m. to investigate reports of an explosion in the building, Wethersfield Fire Capt. James Ritter said. The explosion caused several injuries.
Investigators suspect gas caused the explosion, Ritter said. CNG is investigating the cause.
Four people were transported by ambulance to Hartford Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police didn’t release information on the injured parties’ identities.
Ritter says the incident was contained to the home and there is no threat to neighbors.
The house is still standing and crews are working to figure out where the explosion originated. Most of the damage was at the rear of the building.
The Wethersfield fire marshal and building official are working to determine what happened.
An explosion of this type is unusual in Wethersfield, according to officials. The town has a high use of natural gas, but the gas is perfectly safe, Ritter said.
But Wethersfield fire officials advise people to call 911 if they smell anything strange in their homes. The age of equipment can also cause issues and should be routinely inspected, fire officials said.
Amherst Street was closed for about two hours while crews secured the scene.
