Cutchogue, NY – A man was saved after he was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning on his boat in Cutchogue yesterday, police said.
According to Southold Town police, a rescue call came in at 3:36 p.m. from Alvah’s Lane in Cutchogue. Police said a woman called to say her husband, Ernest Schneider, 78, of Palm City, Florida, was working on his boat in the yard and she thought he may have had a heart attack because he was unable to respond to her.
Southold police officers arrived and found Schneider on his boat, unconscious, police said; the boat was completely wrapped in shrink wrap and engine exhaust was blowing from the boat upon the officers’ arrival.
Recognizing it was a carbon monoxide poisoning, the officers began rescue breathing for Schneider while the shrink wrap was cut away from the boat to provide fresh air, police said; Schneider began breathing on his own after several minutes of rescue breathing.
Cutchogue Fire Department responded, treated and transported Schneider to Peconic Bay Medical Center for further treatment, police said.
