Detroit, MI – A family is struggling to cope with the aftermath; 24 hours after an explosion rocked their home.

It left a young man fighting to recover from critical injuries.

Georgia Trumph wipes away tears as she thinks about her 19-year-old grandson Eugene, She says he’s in the hospital with second and third degree burns all because of a suspected gas leak at his home on Trenton in southwest Detroit.

He was in the basement he lit a lighter and there was natural gas and it blew up,“ Trumph says. “It caught him on fire. His father ran down and put him on the floor and put him out.”

It happened around 5:00 Wednesday night. Eugene was at home with his girlfriend and baby. The baby was not hurt but his girlfriend was also taken to the hospital.

“She got her hair all burned off trying to stop the flames from him,” Trumph says. “It blew the windows out of the sides. What was lucky was the neighbor had a fire extinguisher. He come and put the fire out.”

After firefighters got there they suspected there was a gas leak possibly from a propane tank.

Today, DTE crews were on the scene. They evacuated the three homes as they tried to figure out what happened yesterday.

As Trumph waits for answers, she can’t help but worry about her grandson and his future.

“It’s his face, his chest, his back, his head. They said he’ll have lots of surgery,” she says.

Eugene Trumph remains in critical condition.

As for the suspected gas leak, we’ve reached out to DTE and we’re still waiting for a response.
